As our green leaves transform into glorious shades of yellow, orange, and red, the hills and valleys become an awe-inspiring real-life painting. Here are some ways to become fully immersed in our colorful wonderland this autumn.

Autumn Flightseeing

Witness pure autumn beauty with a Kenai Alaska flightseeing tour offered at Salmon Catcher Lodge. Strap in for a one-hour plane ride above our beautiful region. The Kenai Peninsula is home to some of the most breathtaking natural scenery on the planet. You’ll fly low over colorful Katmai National Park where we’re likely to spot brown bears and their cubs at Hallo Bay. We’ll also cross Cook Inlet to the Lake Clark National Park, one of the most beautiful parks in the world. If you’re aiming to witness glorious fall foliage on your journey to the Kenai Peninsula, then the flightseeing tour is the area’s premier option.

A Journey to Homer

Pack the family in the rental car and trek down the Kenai Peninsula’s coast via Alaska Route 1. This scenic road follows the banks of the Cook Inlet all the way to the quaint bay town of Homer, “where the land ends, and the sea begins.” Four volcanoes are visible from the highway on the way to Homer, and unique fall foliage is around every corner. Make sure to stop in Ninilchik, an old Russian village, for a picnic and some razor clam digging. The beautiful trip from Kenai Alaska to Homer is perhaps better than the destination, but make sure to stop at Ptarmigan Arts, a local cooperative art gallery, before heading back to the Salmon Catcher Lodge. The Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center is also an interesting educational detour before stopping at the Homer Brewing Company for a pint of their velvety Odyssey Oatmeal Stout.

Kenai River Fishing

As the colors begin changing and the water starts to recede, our rivers are plump full of beautiful rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and Arctic char. Consult this guide if you cannot tell the difference between a Dolly Varden and an Arctic char. Not only will a Kenai River fishing trip yield a boatload of fish, but it will also provide breathtaking gorge vistas. The colors that surround the river banks are brighter than the high hills and mountains.
